Why are you here?

Hopefully you want to gain usable knowledge of how to find a better, healthier, version of yourself. To achieve this, we need to start with healing from the the damage that we are subjected to. This damage can be intentional or collateral, accumulated or present. Most of us fall into the “all of the above” category. We all want changes, especially for those changes to manifest as a visual difference. The first change must happen from with in. Clearing the body and as a result the mind. The world we live, in combination with modern lifestyle, can be extremely burdensome to our system. If we take time to clear our bodies it can trigger the new beginning.

Lets set the stage of the world that we interact with. Humans have never before lived in an environment with so many chemicals and pollutants. Lets run through a typical morning. Wake up, jump in a hot shower. Science has recently learned of the absorptive properties of our skin, especially the face, underarms and genitalia. Tap water can carry some very unfriendly chemicals in it. If you live in Southern California, as I do, it is unfortunately some of the worst in the country. See where your county stacks up here, We use shampoo, body wash, made with parabens, brush our teeth with tooth paste made from chemicals. Put on deodorant, (helps our friends, but blocks a major detoxification pathway. I will post on homemade natural deodorant in the future). We put various product in our hair and creams on our skin, and we have only been up for 30 mins and the toxic load is already heavy.  Additionally car exhaust, industrial factories, BPA leaching plastic, pesticides / herbicides, and antibiotics are but a few other relatively new phenomenon to the human body.

All that being said, you don’t need to throw in the towel quite yet. Our bodies are extremely resilient! They have an unmatched ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment. I simply want you to be aware that these toxins can build up. We typically ignore the signs of stress and tend quite the symptoms. Tonight I want to share with you how supporting the bodies detox mechanisms with the right nutrients and procedures can be extremely effective in maintaining health, give our bodies a helping hand, and even address some issues you thought might not be related. When the parts are running efficiently, it paves the way for the system to thrive.

What are Toxins?

Toxin- is any substance that creates irritating and or harmful effects in the body.

-They come from external sources (like air pollution) and internal sources (like cellular waste).

-ANY substance / or nutrient if in excess or out of balance can create toxic elements in the body. Even water can kill us if out of balance.

-Processed food is seen by the body as a toxin.

-To much food (volume) uses extra energy and doesn’t leave enough for house cleaning. Which builds up toxins.

-Even a perfect diet can clog detox pathways if not digested properly.

What is detoxing?

Detoxing is the way the body heals and repairs itself, and always has. It is an internal cleansing process that takes place naturally. This is an entire body system. Not just a “liver” cleanse.

Systems of Detoxification

1. Cardiovascular System– This is the freeway system that shuttles nutrients to, and transports wastes from all of our organs and every cell in our body. This is why it is good to stay active to promote good blood flow to move contents throughout the body.

2. Lymphatic System– Lymph is a colorless fluid containing white blood cells, that bathes the tissues and drains through the lymphatic system into the bloodstream. It acts as a pre filter to help lessen the load on the liver. The Lymph system does not have a pump, it relies on our body movement to create the flow. This is another reason why being active is key.

3. Digestive System– Intestines / Digestive Tract, Liver, and Gallbladder.

Intestines / Digestive tract provide a physical barrier to stop foreign molecules and chemicals from entering the body. It acts like a giant disassembly line. This is why our gut health is so important and Vital to proper detoxing. Otherwise toxins to be eliminated can leak through the gut, reenter the body and simply start the process over again.

Liver– This is the bodies powerhouse for detoxification. It is a transformation site that cleans and purifies the blood that nourishes the entire body. The liver is a busy place. It performs over 500 different functions. It is constantly and continually breaking down the good and bad substances for recycling or preparing for  elimination. Enzymes in the liver help facilitate this process. This includes the neutralizing of toxins. They cannot just be sent out as is, they must be properly prepared and packaged for elimination. There are 3 phases the liver uses to neutralize toxins that I touch on. Phase I is the first break down or functionalization phase. This process can be thought of as adding a reaction site to the toxin to allow it to be neutralized. At this point some toxins are ready for elimination (such as caffeine) most others require a second step in which additional enzymes or nutrients are introduced to make the substance less harmful and prepared to exit the body or cleaning which is phase II or conjugation phase. This is where the the toxin is locked down and a transformation takes place. Key nutrients are needed at this point to have the liver at maximum efficiency. Once the toxins are neutralized they then are sent to be expelled from the body with the help of transporter proteins. This is part of phase III. They exit through the gallbladder as bile, to the kidneys as urine, or through the skin as sweat.

Gallbladder-while seen in some medical communities as unnecessary. It is actually a key component to digestion and to detoxification. Especially digestion of fats. If you have had it removed it is important to to supplement with bile salts and enzymes to restore proper breakdown of foods.

4. Kidneys– Are an extra filter for the blood. They prevent the build up of wastes and extra fluid in the body. Toxins that are ready for elimination are packaged and sent to the kidneys where they are filtered out. Water is also key here as the it helps the fluid more easily flow. More flow, equals more filtering, more filtering leads to more cleaning. Thick vicious blood is a burden on the body resulting in a pump that has to work harder to achieve the same goal.

5. Skin– Sweat glands of the skin act as a second Kidney and is another avenue for elimination for the body. Again proper hydration is key to allow for the production of sweat. Otherwise the body may want to eliminate toxins but, will not do at the expense of being dehydrated.

6. Respiratory– Lungs eliminate a variety of waste products particularly carbon dioxide. When was the last time you opened you lungs and took a deep breath and out? Dare you to do it for 5 breaths and see how you feel.

How do we know if we are toxic?

This is not a fair question because we are all toxic. Its more of a question of how toxic are we? And how well are the pathways working? Some common signs of dysfunction may be:

-Allergies or intolerances to certain foods.

-Bad breath, Foul smelling gas or stools. (with discernment, I know kind of an oxymoron).

-Constipation, diarrhea, irregular bowl moments.

-Frequent congestion, colds, and viruses.

-Low energy, feeling slow, foggy, headaches

-Excess need for sleep

-Skin problems, rashes, boils, pimples & acne.

-Depression, and other neurological problems.
